marylandSecretary of Commerce Mike Gill is looking for an energetic and focused individual to lead the State's activities in the life sciences arena. This is a highly collaborative role. Its objective is to advance Maryland as the premier center for biotechnology innovation and entrepreneurial vitality in the nation. The position is based within the Department of Business and Economic Development, and reports to the Managing Director of Business and Industry Sector Development.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Management of prospect activity in the sector on behalf of the State, from early stage to global firms.
  • Coordination or initiation of joint entrepreneurial, workforce and business development projects with a range of organizations, including Federal (e.g., NIH), not-for-profit (BioHealth Innovation), higher education (Johns Hopkins, UMB) and State (TEDCO).
  • Providing staffing to (and advised by) the Maryland Life Sciences Advisory Board.
  • Directing and providing content to marketing campaigns aimed at the life sciences community, including a presence at the annual international Bio conference.

Desired attributes and experience

  • Business development experience and/or orientation.
  • Familiarity with key and emerging players in the life sciences industry, and with regional and national R&D, accelerator and sector organizations.
  • Solid understanding of biotechnology and health care industry trends and technologies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Minimum of ten years relevant work experience, in private or public sector spheres.

Compensation

Salary is in the $120,000-$130,000 range and is accompanied by a generous benefits package.
