Building on a 30-year relationship with Children's National, Costco Wholesale has pledged $25 million to ensure that children in the Washington area will continue to have access to expert pediatric care. In recognition of their longstanding support, Children's National is naming the hospital's main atrium the Costco Wholesale Atrium.

The MdBio Foundation, a non-profit that provides STEM education and workforce development to underserved communities, is celebrating its 16th school year of delivering innovative, hands-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education to students aboard mobile laboratories. During the 2017-18 school year, the foundation will debut its new Mobile eXploration Lab (MXLab), the largest mobile laboratory of its kind in the U.S., at high schools across the state of Maryland, and begin offering a new mobile program for middle schools in Washington, D.C., through a $1.36 million grant from the Verizon Foundation.

Roche immunotherapy Tecentriq has won European Union approval for treating advanced lung and bladder cancer, the Swiss drugmaker said.

The European Commission approved Tecentriq, also known as atezolizumab, as a monotherapy for locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after patients have been treated with chemotherapy.

The Cedars-Sinai accelerator, managed by Techstars, kicked off its third class of healthcare startups this month. some of which are more mature than previous cohorts with a seed stage round behind them. Whittled down from roughly 600 applicants, the 10 companies are seeking to improve the patient experience, offer more personalized care plans for cancer treatment, triage faster and make blood sample collection less painful. Their technologies span artificial intelligence, voice recognition, microfluidics, and natural language processing.

CEL-SCI Corporation (NYSE American: CVM) announced today that it has been awarded a new Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases entitled “Preclinical studies of PG70 LEAPS peptide vaccine for rheumatoid arthritis”. The grant in the amount of approximately $1.5 million will provide funding to allow CEL-SCI to advance its first LEAPS product candidate, CEL-4000, towards an Investigational New Drug (IND) application, by funding GMP manufacturing, IND enabling studies, and additional mechanism of action studies.

When a hospital needs to rush a delivery from a lab somewhere else in a densely populated city–for example, when a surgeon needs an urgent biopsy of a tumor in the middle of a surgery to determine how much tissue to remove, or a gunshot victim in the ER needs blood that the hospital doesn’t have in stock–that delivery can sometimes get stuck in traffic. Couriers are also expensive. In Switzerland, hospitals and labs will soon begin using drones to make those deliveries instead.
