UVA will be breaking ground on the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology.

According to a release, this institute will propel UVA to the forefront of cutting-edge medical research, fast-track the development of new treatments and cures, and transform the delivery of health care.

The institute is named for Paul and Diane Manning, who made a $100 million donation toward it.

Officials say it will generate hundreds of jobs directly and could indirectly lead to thousands of jobs in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields.

“This is a historic moment for UVA and for the Commonwealth as we break ground on a world-class translational research facility that will yield promising new treatments for patients,” said UVA President James E. Ryan. “I’m grateful to Paul and Diane Manning for their extraordinary generosity, to Governor [Glenn] Youngkin and the Commonwealth for their investment, and to all those on Grounds and across the state who have worked tirelessly to make this possible.”
