Roche immunotherapy Tecentriq has won European Union approval for treating advanced lung and bladder cancer, the Swiss drugmaker said.

An Annapolis medical technology company is moving its headquarters to The LaunchPort, a device manufacturing accelerator set to be housed at the City Garage startup hub in Port Covington.

Vixiar Medical spun out of research at Johns Hopkins. Three years later, the startup will officially be a Baltimore company.

Contrary Capital, a university-focused venture capital fund, officially launched on Monday at 55 colleges across the country, including Hopkins. Contrary works with 100 students to find start-ups and projects within their university communities in which they can invest.

The Cedars-Sinai accelerator, managed by Techstars, kicked off its third class of healthcare startups this month. some of which are more mature than previous cohorts with a seed stage round behind them. Whittled down from roughly 600 applicants, the 10 companies are seeking to improve the patient experience, offer more personalized care plans for cancer treatment, triage faster and make blood sample collection less painful. Their technologies span artificial intelligence, voice recognition, microfluidics, and natural language processing.

Larger medtech companies have traditionally shied away from investing in the pediatric market, but the landscape is changing. In the last year alone, we witnessed the passage of the 21st Century Cures Act and the signing of the FDA Reauthorization Act (FDARA 2017) into law. The industry is ripe for innovation and these legislative advances present new opportunities to connect innovators with the investment community.

CEL-SCI Corporation (NYSE American: CVM) announced today that it has been awarded a new Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases entitled “Preclinical studies of PG70 LEAPS peptide vaccine for rheumatoid arthritis”. The grant in the amount of approximately $1.5 million will provide funding to allow CEL-SCI to advance its first LEAPS product candidate, CEL-4000, towards an Investigational New Drug (IND) application, by funding GMP manufacturing, IND enabling studies, and additional mechanism of action studies.

When a hospital needs to rush a delivery from a lab somewhere else in a densely populated city–for example, when a surgeon needs an urgent biopsy of a tumor in the middle of a surgery to determine how much tissue to remove, or a gunshot victim in the ER needs blood that the hospital doesn’t have in stock–that delivery can sometimes get stuck in traffic.
