The blockbuster pharmaceutical era continues to be challenged. While the investments in drug development in the past decade have grown substantially, the cost to approval has skyrocketed, putting significant pressure on the big pharma business model which has historically been centered on billion dollar drugs. The persistent weak economic environment, patent expiration issues, the passage of U.S. biosimilars pathway, among others, is driving fundamental changes in the industry.

This day-long event will explore the opportunities for accelerating technology transfer in those universities that have not traditionally focused on this activity. It will demonstrate how this has been successfully achieved at institutions such as Johns Hopkins.
Johns Hopkins Technology Transfer rose from 98th to 26th in the AUTM rankings within four years. It has increased disclosures from less than 100 to more than 300 a year and start ups from less than 5 to more than ten a year. Along with other emerging academic centers in technology transfer, Johns Hopkins is demonstrating how to make the quantum leap into this rapidly evolving field.
