JLABS - Breaking Dependencies on Seasonal Vaccines to Address Infectious Diseases

Technology has the potential to break our reliance on annual or seasonal vaccinations and provide longer durability and greater reliability for coronaviruses, influenza, rhinoviruses, and more. Through innovation, there is an opportunity to increase the impact and acceptance of vaccinations and develop more consistent and impactful outcomes to reach large numbers of individuals, regardless of risk level, with one or more vaccines and limit the spread of infection disease. This program will address the state of breaking the seasonal dependencies and what challenges lie ahead for researchers and innovators.

BSL-3 Resources at George Mason University

George Mason University’s (GMU) 52,000 square-foot Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL) is one of 12 NIAID-funded regional biocontainment facilities to support infectious disease research and foster collaborations with other national and global laboratories. The BRL is fully approved and licensed for work by the CDC and USDA and is accredited by AAALAC. It is located on Mason’s SciTech campus (Manassas, VA), situated 40 miles from Washington D.C.

Our innovative faculty actively engage in and value interdisciplinary collaborations. We also have an applied research support services team led by Mason’s Institute for Biohealth Innovation to work with external partners including academia, not-for-profit organizations, industry, and government studying biodefense and emerging infectious diseases.

Attendees will learn about the capabilities we have to 1) generate advanced knowledge of pathogen biology and host interaction mechanisms and 2) evaluate diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines to counter the threat of bio-terrorism and newly emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases. They will also learn about related faculty expertise and platform technologies that are being developed to support advancement of new infectious disease countermeasures.

Children's National Hospital Innovation Day and Showcase 2023

The organizers of the 2023 Children’s National Innovation Day & Showcase are thrilled to announce that registration is now open for this premier event highlighting innovation in pediatric healthcare. The event will take place on May 31, 2023, at the Children’s National Research and Innovation Campus (CNRIC) in Washington, DC.

Building on the success of previous events, this year's showcase will feature two main components:

  • Children’s National Pre-Tech-Transfer Projects: Attendees will have the opportunity to discover cutting-edge projects developed by Children’s National that are seeking potential co-developers, licensees, and sponsors. These projects represent the forefront of pediatric medical advancements.

  • Startup Companies: The event will also showcase a diverse range of startup companies, including those that have emerged from Children’s National as well as like-minded startups focused on commercializing pediatric medical products. Investors and strategic partners will have the opportunity to connect with these innovative ventures.

Webinar: T Cell Receptor Targeting CD22 for the Treatment of Lymphomas and Leukemias

Register to attend a free NIH webinar. Attendees will learn about a new T-cell receptor (TCR) that targets CD22, being developed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a cellular immunotherapy to treat lymphomas and leukemias. CD22 TCR-T cells clear leukemia at clinically relevant doses without causing systemic cytokine elevation.

The webinar will highlight:

  1. Novel CD22 specific TCR-T cells reducing tumor burden at clinically relevant doses
  2. A new therapeutic method using these novel CD22 specific TCR-T cells that overcomes current treatment limitations for hematologic malignancies.

Pitch and Mingle Series: The Pitchout

Join the Maryland Innovation Center for our pitch competition featuring entrepreneurs and start up companies in the community. $10,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. Spirited in atmosphere and in food and drink offerings, Pitch and Mingle is the perfect opportunity to stir up your social network, mingling with fellow attendees over light fare and libations.

Come support the community’s entrepreneurs, participate in the selection process, and make connections over cocktails at the MIC.

So how does it work? Five startups are selected to present a four minute pitch. This is followed by four minutes of Q&A from the panel of judges and audience. At the end, our judges will come together and select the top 3 companies! These winners will receive cash prizes with first place receiving $3,000! In addition, there will be a “Crowd Favorite” award which is selected by the audience. Judges to be announced soon.
