BHI is seeking two experienced life science professionals with product development and investment experience to join the BHI team to serve as a part-time Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

These positions will report to and work closely with our lead at the NIH Small business Education and Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) Office to support academic and small business innovators in their efforts to validate the potential health impacts of promising scientific discoveries and advance them into healthcare products that improve patient care and enhance health.

(Jan. 29, 2014) – A recent third-party economic development impact study conducted by Battelle Technology Partnership Practice (TPP), the world's largest non-profit research and development organization, has found that the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) currently supports more than $565.9 million in economic contributions and more than 2,835 jobs in the State of Maryland annually, earning $200.5 million in salaries with estimated State and local government revenues of $22.8 million. The study also determined the economic contribution of TEDCO programs is projected to grow to $910.3 million and support a total of 4,527 jobs by 2018. These jobs will earn $320.3 million in salaries with estimated State and local government revenues of $36.6 million.

There is a large gap between disruptive technological innovations in Universities and federal labs and commercially relevant technologies that enter the market. One of the principal reasons for this gap is the absence of resources (entrepreneurs, knowledge base, capital, etc) to facilitate the movement of the technology along the commercialization path.

The Entrepreneur-in-Residence Program at BHI is aimed at ensuring that disruptive technologies receive all the resources that are required to transform the technology from a discovery into a commercially relevant product and eventually have a measurable impact on human health. The program has been created to support scientists, early stage start-ups and licensed technologies to provide them with access to these resources.

A University of Maryland medical student named Veena S. Katikineni is part of a pair of students that won a competition put on my Scientists Without Borders, in which they designed an innovative solution to deal with mental health issues.

Veena Katikineni (courtesy of her Twitter account, @VeenaSK125) Katikineni – along with Alejandra Leyton, a Bolivian-born health economist and master’s student at Tulane University, where she is studying public health – will split the $10,000 prize bestowed upon them. Their innovation is called “Mhealth for Mental Health,” which is an idea to use SMS text messaging services to provide fast, reliable, and relatively affordable information about mental health afflictions to communities around the world.

On May 20, 2013, the White House Lab-To-Market Inter-Agency Summit was held in Washington, D.C. The Summit was organized by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Institutes of Health's Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The purpose of the meeting was extraordinary: asking national experts outside of the federal agency system to recommend ways to increase the return-on-investment for the $140 billion annual taxpayer expenditure on federally-funded research and development.

The purpose of the NHLBI SBIR Phase IIB Bridge Award is to facilitate and accelerate the capital-intensive steps that are required to transition SBIR Phase II projects to the commercialization stage by promoting partnerships between SBIR Phase II awardees and third-party investors and/or strategic partners. The Bridge Award encourages business relationships between applicant small business concerns and third-party investors/strategic partners who can provide substantial financing to help accelerate the commercialization of promising new products and technologies that were initiated with SBIR funding. In particular, applicants are expected to leverage their previous SBIR support, as well as the opportunity to compete for additional funding through the NHLBI Bridge Award program, to attract and negotiate third-party financing needed to advance a product or technology toward commercialization. The applicant’s ability to secure independent third-party investor funds that equal or exceed the total amount of the NHLBI funds being requested over the entire Bridge Award project period will help to validate the commercial potential that is essential for the SBIR projects solicited under the Bridge Award program. It is anticipated that many of the partnerships between small businesses and third-party investors will involve a considerable level of project due diligence by the private sector, thereby increasing the likelihood of commercial success for the funded projects. In light of these goals, the NHLBI strongly encourages applicants to establish business relationships with investors, strategic partners or both that have appropriate prior experience in commercializing emerging biomedical technologies.
