In 2012, Maryland ranked 5th in the number and total value of Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) program awards, after California, Massachusetts, Virginia and New York. Maryland firms received 265 awards valued at $94 million. A DBED analysis of SBIR/STTR Phase I and Phase II data shows that the number and value of awards decreased nationally in the last four years, and Maryland followed this trend. Even so, when compared to other states, Maryland consistently ranked within the top five recipients of SBIR/STTR awards in both the number and the dollar value of awards received.

life-sciences-xconomyOne big East Coast pharmaceutical firm abandoned work on a hepatitis C drug this week, while another shuttered a young company that had cost it $720 million to acquire. But new ideas continue to burst forth, and investors pitched in $20 million for another hopeful startup.

The Connecticut company that figured out how to make a recombinant flu vaccine is now trying to invent a marketing strategy for it. And in New Jersey, one of the biggest sources of marketing data for drug companies snapped up a startup that helps organize all that information.

On a recent business trip to China, I was automatically assumed to be an interpreter or assistant because I was helping with communication on both sides. I had to assert myself and remind my colleagues that I, too, had original thoughts to contribute. This small example shines light on the issue of how Asian women are often perceived. We are seen as competent and hard-working, partly due to stereotypes, but not necessarily powerful or influential. In fact, projecting an image of power can invoke some resentment and cause discomfort. A man I once supervised admitted to me that he was not used to having a woman as manager. At least he was honest, which made it easier to work out the problem.

New Enterprise Associates raised the most money of any venture capital firm in 2012.

New Enterprise, headquartered in Chevy Chase and has a Timonium office, raised $2.6 billion last year. That topped the 182 venture capital firms that raised a total of $20.6 billion in 2012, according to Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association. That dollar figure was up 10 percent from 2011.

Meanwhile, Chevy Chase’s Global Environment Fund also made the list, raising $18.9 million in 2012.

A Compelling Opportunity

The BioHealth Capital Region has unmatched biohealth assets from iconic federal institutions, world-class universities, top-notch healthcare facilities, and global and emerging bioscience companies. However, we have yet to fully realize the return on investment from these assets. This is largely due to the lack of a cohesive strategy in moving ideas from labs to the market. While other regions with far less assets have proactively addressed this opportunity by creating innovation-driven economic development organizations and initiatives. It is time central Maryland started to close this gap, and it is BioHealth Innovation’s mission to complete.

What does BHI do?

BHI sources and evaluates market-relevant biohealth intellectual properties, connects the IP with funding, and assists businesses in marketing and growth. It aims to:

- Increase the flow of private and public early stage capital;

- Develop an active commercialization talent network;

- Facilitate accelerated tech transfer and commercialization of relevant innovations;

- Market and brand the region as a global biohealth leader; and

- Ensure an adequate supply of experienced biohealth entrepreneurs and workers.

Maryland

Starting Tuesday, entrepreneurs in Maryland are being urged to meet some people getting off a bus.

It’s not just any bus. It’s a bus that organizers say can help entrepreneurs take their businesses to another level.

Called “Pitch Across Maryland,” a group of entrepreneurs, investors and others will be on the bus and will dispense advice to representatives of fledgling businesses. They will listen to business owners pitch their ideas, with the best ones getting a chance for national exposure and prizes.

The campaign by Startup Maryland, the local offshoot of the Startup America Partnership that formed last year, kicks off Tuesday with a meeting in Howard County. Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of Baltimore sports apparel company Under Armour, is a member of national group’s board of directors, along with former NBA great Magic Johnson, computer giant CEO Michael Dell and top executives with FedEx, Netflix and LinkedIn.
